TRANSITION TOWN

Close your eyes and imagine your life without oil. Impossible?

Well, according to the people behind the emergence of so-called "transition towns", it may not be too far away. The first town in the UK to embrace a future without oil was Totnes in Devon in September 2006 and since then many others have joined it.  Royal Leamington Spa has now become the First Transition Town in Warwickshire (see below) . You can see which communities in the United Kingdom are working toward Transition Town status and those that have achieved the accolade by visiting www.transitiontowns.org

LEAMINGTON SPA BECOMES FIRST TRANSITION

TOWN IN WARWICKSHIRE

Leamington Spa has received a welcome boost to its campaign to become a Transition Town with the announcement by the Transition Town Network that its application has been successful.

Following support from Royal Leamington Spa Town Council, an initial public meeting was held in September 20007, at which a Steering Group was formed to build community interest and develop a programme to set Leamington on the path to a low carbon future, less reliant on fossil fuels and ready to meet the challenges of climate change.  This has lead to the adoption of a Constitution and a new Association "Transition Town Leamington.”

The Association will be considering various projects that can be developed with other partners to help raise levels of awareness of the positive influence of sustainable living, renewable energy and local food production on the world’s limited resources and climate change.  A new Steering Group has now been formed following an "Open Meeting" in October 2009 and a new Consittution adopted.
